In this post, I want to address some questions you might have about coming to Moni Ora if you have never visited us before.
What brings people to us varies but is always deeply personal. Sometimes people are hesitant about coming or feeling whakamā. The Moni Ora team understands how difficult it is for people to reach out for support with something so fundamental as our money.
At Moni Ora, we believe that people are capable of managing their finances, and for the most part, don't need us. But life throws curve balls.
Often people who come are in financial crisis and seeking help with a hardship application but we also help those who just want to do better. Everyone is different.
We aim for everyone who enters our door to feel welcome and safe.
Moni Ora accepts walk-ins and referrals from organisations working with people who are worried about money and want budgeting support.

General questions asked pre-visit
How much does it cost to see a Financial Mentor?
Nothing! Our service is completely free.
Is it private?
Yes! We take your privacy seriously and will maintain confidentiality in all matters.
What is a financial mentor?
Financial mentors will help you organise your money so that it makes sense for you. Mentors will support you to find what options and actions can help improve things.
Using simple budgeting tools the mentor can show you your true financial position. We can advise and guide you, but ultimately you make the decisions about what actions you want to take.
Do you take over my money, and tell me what to do?
No. You stay in control of your own money and you make your own decisions.
Moni Ora does not offer Total Money Management services. We prefer to help people take control of their own money and teach money management skills needed to keep control.
We offer free tools from simple payday budget planners to the downloadable spreadsheets on this website. We can help you set up your budget using the tools, and teach you to monitor week-by-week, month-by-month.
Some people like to have ongoing sessions to talk through life's money challenges as they arise. Over time you will build confidence and resilience... and savings!
Who can get support from Moni Ora?
All welcome. Waged or unwaged.
We offer personal budgeting services to individuals and families who live in the Tairāwhiti region and want help.
How long does it take?
Generally, sessions are about 60 minutes. There is no set number of sessions, it's up to you and what you want. Many people find they benefit from 3-4 sessions depending on personal circumstances.
A hardship application or an application to Ngā Tāngata Microfinance for a zero-interest zero-fee loan might take a few more sessions.
After the crisis, a mentor can continue to support with longer-term planning, and building financial knowledge and resilience.
What should I bring to my session?
Making a list of all your income and expenses can be useful.
If you still get bank statements or creditor letters in the post - bring them.
At Moni Ora, we have private guest computers for you to access online accounts. You can print off any relevant documentation at the service (as you want/need).
In general, the more information you bring the faster we can help you make a plan of action to solve your money worry. But if you can't find everything, don't worry it's more important to start by attending your session, and your mentor can help you organise what you need.
